Today, New York State legislators passed a bill that will put a cap on upcoming Uber and Lyft Drivers for one year. This is being done in an effort to reduce congestion and traffic in New York. Before any ride hailing apps came to New York, Yellow Cab Drivers made an adequate living by driving within the 5 Boroughs and were able to invest in a better life. But, in the last 4 years there has been a rise in suicides within Yellow Cab Drivers primarily because Uber and Lyft

dominated the Taxi market and it made difficult for Yellow Cab drivers to earn money.

There will still be Uber’s and Lyft’s on the streets of New York. But, there will be much fewer of them.

Mayor Blasio believes that this bill can ease the burdens of the Yellow Cab business and will be fair for all FHV drivers.

However many are against this bill. According to NPR, “Supporters of Uber and Lyft say that in addition to helping alleviate New Yorkers from unreliable public transit, the services have been a help when yellow cabs have a record of not stopping for African-American and Hispanic New Yorkers.” Social Leaders say this bill will effect minorities as it had in the past.

Uber created jobs in New York and gave hope to minorities while Yellow Cab drivers are struggling to make a living.
